Passage 1:
A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought inVietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco. “Mom and Dad, I’m coming home, but I’ve a favor to ask. I have a friend. I’d like to bring him home with me.”
“Sure,” they replied, “we’d love to meet him.”
“There’s something you should know, ” the son continued, “he was injured pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mine(地雷) and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to live with us.”
“We’re sorry to hear that, son. But, maybe we can help him find somewhere to live.”
“No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us.”
“Son,” said the father, “you don’t know what you’re asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden to us. We have our own lives to live, and we can’t let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He’ll find a way to live on his own.”
At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building. The police believed he had killed himself.
The grief-stricken(悲痛欲绝的) parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue(太平间) to identify the body of their son. They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn’t know, their son had only one arm and one leg.

On TV Ads(论电视广告)
满分: 15分 得分: 15分
学生答案:
A woman takes a stained clothing item to a smartlydressed man who then washes the stain away withmiracle was hing powder. The immediateresponse from the woman is that this brand ofwashing powder is indeed superior to all otherbrands. Such is one of the typical commercial adsthat are repeatedly shown on TV every evening. Towards this; people hold different attitudes.
Those who maintain positive opinions believe that TVads help to bring into public view a good deal of news; mostly commercial; which mightotherwise have remained unknown. Those who hate TV ads say that most of the ads; especially their repetition; have reached the point of irritation and they are just a waste oftime.
In my opinion; both views are lop-sided. On the one hand; TV ads; in the form of a rtisticpictures; are presented in such a fantastic way and with such witty language that they notonly seduce customers to buy their products; but also give people enjoyment. On the otherhand; not all ads are trustworthy. A certain number of them are deceitful.
To sum up; ads seek to influence our decisions and tell us what to do usually with the aimbehind them being to enrich some business. To resist this influence so as to make wisedecisions; we must rely on our own judgement and ability to reason.
