Period-2 Understanding Ideas说课稿

Today, I would like to say that the content of the class is the New Foreign language Teaching and Research Press, a compulsory course in high school English. Unit 4, Period-2 Understanding Ideas, the subject of this unit is “Friends forever”. Through inquiry activities, in order to better achieve the teaching objectives, in order to better achieve the teaching objectives, I give lectures from the teaching objectives and core literacy, teaching difficulties, learning situation analysis, teaching methods, teaching process and so on.

Ⅰ. Discourse Analysis

Thematic context : Human and Society – Friendship.

Text type : Argumentation.

Text Analysis: The text is aimed to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of online friendship. By comparing the difference between making friends in the past and at present, the author raises a question, namely “when you ‘friend’ people online, does this mean that they are your real friends?”. By objectively presenting the advantages and disadvantages of friending online, the author calls on readers “do not throw the baby out with the bathwater” .

  1. Analysis of Students
  2. All kinds of cognitive ability of senior high school students are constantly improved, and their thinking ability is more mature.
  3. Abstract logical thinking, dialectical thinking and creative thinking have been greatly developed, and learning consciousness has been obviously improved.
  4. Senior high school students have a more adequate and real experience of family life in thematic context, which is helpful to the study of this unit.

III. Teaching objectives and core literacy

  1. Language ability goal: Get the main idea and learn to analyze the author’s attitude towards the topic by details.

2.Cultural awareness objectives:  Treat online friendship rationally based on daily-life experience.

  1. Thinking quality goal: Cultivate the critical and logical thinking ability.
  2. Learning ability goal: Master the structure of the passage and know the features and skills of writing an argumentation.

My teaching design is divided into the following links.

Step-1: Lead-in

  1. Ss look at three questions about friendship and tick their answers.

1)How do you prefer to make friends?

2)How do you prefer to communicate with friends every day?

3)How do you stay in touch with faraway friends?

Design intention: To activate Ss’ background knowledge and lead to the topic.

Step-2:Pre-reading

  1. T guides Ss to observe the title and given pictures in the passage.

1)What’s the title of the passage?

2)What can you see from the picture?

3)What will the article mainly talk about?

4)Is the question mark essential? Why?

5)Can we replace the title “Click for a friend” with “Online friendship”? Why or why not?

(Question 4-5 will be left to be discussed in the post-reading part)

Design intention: To attract Ss interest and gain useful information given by the editor.

Step-3: While-reading

Activity 1:

T asks Ss to fill the blanks with given choices to complete the passage according to the context.

  1. But we need to keep in mind that what we  see on social media is often not the whole truth about a person.
  2. such as collecting model cars or playing an unusual instrument.
  3. As Aristotle said, no one would choose to live without friends, even if he had all other goods.
  4. What if the only way of getting news from faraway friends was writing letters that took ages to be delivered?
  5. Nowadays, we can move around the world and still stay in touch with the people that we want to remain friends with.

Design intention: To improve Ss’ analyzing and reasoning ability.

Activity 2: Read for text type

T asks Ss to read the passage quickly and focus on the text type with the help of task 1.

Design intention: To improve Ss’ analyzing ability.

Activity 3: Read for structure and main idea

1)T plays the listening tape of the passage. Ss work individually to divide the passage into three parts with the hints and then fill the blanks.

 

2) T asks Ss to complete the blanks about the advantages and disadvantages of online friendship in Para6-7.

3) T shares an interesting video to help Ss understand the meaning of the sentence “Remember the saying: on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.”

4) Ss choose the writing purpose of the argumentation.

Design intention:To practice Ss’ ability in locating the specific information and develop their analyzing and summarizing abilities.To figure out the author’s writing purpose.

Activity 4: Read for skills

Ss work in groups to discuss the skills of writing a good argumentation.

1)ask questions (arouse interest and trigger thought)

2)give examples (give more details and resonated with readers)

3)quote famous remarks (make the opinion more persuasive)

Design intention:To help Ss gain more useful writing skills to write an argumentation in the future.

Step-4: Post-reading

Think and share

Ss share their opinion about the following questions

1)Is the question mark essential? Why?

2)Can we replace the title “Click for a friend” with “Online friendship”? Why or why not?

  1. Could you explain “throw the baby out with the bathwater” in English? Do you know of any similar sayings in China?

Design intention: To cultivate Ss’ critical thinking and to encourage Ss to treat online friendship objectively.

Step-5: Conclusion & Homework

  1. T summarizes the lesson and assigns homework:

In the era of the pandemic COVID-19, are you for or against online friendship? Design a poster to call on students to friend online or say no to it.

[Three skills are encouraged to be used.]

Design intention: To review and consolidate what they have learned in this lesson.
