One of the more surprisingdevelopments of the last few decades has been the ascendance of computers to aposition of prevalence in human affairs. Today there are more computers in ourhomes and offices than there are people who live and work in them.Yet many ofthese computers are not recognized as such by their users. In this unit, I’llexplain what embedded systems are and where they are found. I will alsointroduce the subject of embedded programming, explain why I have selected Cand C++ as the languages for this book, and describe the hardware used in theexamples.
Anembedded system is a combination of computer hardware and software, and perhapsadditional mechanical or other parts, designed to perform a specific function.A good example is the microwave oven. Almost every household has one, and tensof millions of them are used every day, but very few people realize that aprocessor and software are involved in the preparation of their lunch ordinner.
Thisis in direct contrast to the personal computer in the family room. It too iscomprised of computer hardware and software and mechanical components (diskdrives, for example). However, a personal computer is not designed to perform aspecific function. Rather, it is able to do many different things. Many peopleuse the term general-purpose computer to make this distinction clear. Asshipped, a general-purpose computer is a blank slate; the manufacturer does notknow what the customer will do with it. One customer may use it for a networkfile server, another may use it exclusively for playing games, and a third mayuse it to write the next great American novel.
