Can Boys and Girls Be Just Friends?
She has been your good friend all your life. You know you love her, but you are afraid to tell her. You don’t want to lose her friendship, but you don’t want to just be friends.
Relationships are confusing. Some people say that boys and girls can be “just friends” while others believe it is impossible because such friendships will always deepen into love. This question has no easy answer, but there are some clear facts to consider.
First, boys rarely think in the same way as girls, and therefore usually have a different idea of what love and friendship are all about. A boy often notices a girl because of her looks, but a girl may notice a boy more because of his personality.
Boys’ and girls’ way of communication also differ greatly. Most girls love to talk, and often have many close girlfriends with whom they share all their secrets. Boys, however, do not communicate so much, and usually have only a few good friends.
Girls and boys behave differently in friendships with the opposite gender. While playing a basketball game with just boys, a boy may slap his friend’s butt. To do this to a girl, however, would be considered improper conduct, even if they were friends.
Having a good friend of the opposite gender can help boys and girls learn to communicate. A girl is good at offering advice and support to a boy, and a boy is usually good at solving problems. When a boy makes good friends with a girl, he has an opportunity to show his more sensitive side. When a girl makes good friends with a boy, she may be able to show the strong side of her personality a little more often than when she makes friends with a girl.
These friendships may be possible, but it is also possible for them to deepen into love. Are the rewards worth the risks? Only you can decide.
