I was born with adisability that affects my sense of balance, causing me to walk with a limp. Not only does it affect the function of the legs, but it also has an impact onthe kidneys.
The disabilityhas had its ups and downs. As a young child, I can remember the way otherchildren would stare at me because of the way that I walked. There were manytimes that my schoolmates would laugh at me call me names simply because oftheir lack of understanding, especially back in the mid 70s and early 80s.Children then were just unwilling to take the time to learn why one of their classmatesmight walk, speak or seem noticeably different from themselves.
Now that I am anadult, I have noticed that the stares and names have begun to fade, andjudgments that once were negative have begun to turn toward acceptance. Thesigning of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has played a great part inbreaking down some of those barriers that, as a child, left me to fight a warthat seemed to have no end. Now I look beyond what I can’t do and focus on whatI can. I have learned that limitations open doors that have been closed, showing other ways to meet our needs. I have always looked at life as achallenge, grasping each obstacle with open arms.
There is nothingin this world that comes easy. I must stand tall and look forward, to be everso ready for what still lies ahead. People often feel sorry for those who wereborn with some type of disability. But their compassion is misplaced.
Yes, I may not beable to run as fast or perform certain tasks, but my disability gives me abetter look at life and all that’s around me. I want to be seen not as adisability but as a person who has, and will continue to, bloom (成长). So I decided to becomean advocate (倡导者) onbehalf of disabled Americans, to fight for our rights that for so long have beenignored.
I feel that itonly takes one powerful voice to change the minds of many nations, and as longas I have a mouth to use and a mind to think I will continue to work to bringpeace upon the disabled community.

When John and VictoriaFalls arrived in New York City for one-year stay, they did not bring very manythings with them. They had planned either to live in a furnished apartment orto buy used furniture. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture thatthey may soon dislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buyfurniture that they really like. Meanwhile, they find they can rent betterquality furniture than they could afford to buy.
One family, who now have alarge, beautiful home of their own, liked their rented furniture so much thatthey decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things.
