Many students find the experience of attending university lectures to be a confusing and frustrating experience. The lecturer speaks for one or two hours, perhaps (D-31) (extending / illustrating / performing) the talk with slides, writing up important information on the blackboard, (D-32)  (attributing / contributing / distributing) reading material and giving out assignments. The new student sees the other students continuously writing on notebooks and wonders what to write. Very often the student leaves the lecture with notes which do not catch the main points and which become hard even for the students to understand. Most institutions provide courses which (D-33)  (prevent / require / assist) new students to develop the skills they need to be effective listeners and note-takers. If these are unavailable, there are many useful study-skills guides which enable learners to practice these skills independently. In all cases it is important to (D-34)   (evaluate / acquaint / tackle) the problem before actually starting your studies. It is important to acknowledge that most students have difficulty in acquiring the language skills required in college study. One way of overcoming these difficulties is to attend the language and study-skills classes which most institutions provide throughout the academic year. Another basic strategy is to find a study partner (D-35)   (in that / for which / with whom) it is possible to identify difficulties, exchange ideas and provide support.

Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. (每个段落均标有字母。填写答案时,仅填写每段前的大写字母即可,不要使用小写或者有多余空格,以免判错。)
A. To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research. How should you forgive? Try the following steps:
B. Calm yourself. To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique. You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.
C. Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time. Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.
D. Take the control away from your offender. Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who causes you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.
E. Try to see things from your offender’s angle. If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.
F. Don’t forget to forgive yourself. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge. But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.
D-46. It’s necessary to try some stress-management techniques to calm down.
D-47. Being in your offender’s shoes can help you forgive.
D-48. It’s also important to forgive yourself.
D-49. Waiting for an apology is unnecessary sometimes.
D-50. Looking for positive things around you rather than rethinking your wounded feelings.

Part IV Reading comprehension (阅读理解题。包括3篇阅读材料,每篇阅读材料后有5个问题,请从选项中选出最佳答案。)
Passage One
Social media can be a powerful communication tool for employees, helping them to collaborate, share ideas and solve problems. Research has shown that 82% of employees think social media can improve work relationships, and 60% believe it can support decision-making processes. These beliefs contribute to a majority of workers connecting with colleagues on social media, even during work hours.
Employers typically worry that social media is a productivity killer. More than half of U. S. employers reportedly block access to social media at work. In my research with 277 employees of a health care organization I found these concerns to be misguided. Social media doesn’t reduce productivity nearly as much as it kills employees’ retention.
In the first part of the study, I surveyed employees about why and how they used platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. Respondents were then asked about their work behavior, including whether they felt motivated in their jobs and showed initiative at work. I found that employees who engage in online social interactions with co-workers through social media blogs tend to be more motivated and come up with innovative ideas. But when employees interact with individuals outside the organization, they are less motivated and show less initiative. These findings suggest that the effects of social media depend on whom employees interact with. Employees who interact with their colleagues share meaningful work experiences, but those making connections outside the organization are distracted and unproductive.
In the second part of the study, I found 76% of employees using social media for work took an interest in other organizations they found on social media. When I examined how respondents expressed openness to new careers and employers, I found that they engaged in some key activities including researching new organizations and making new work connections.
These findings present a dilemma for managers: Employees using social media at work are more engaged and more productive, but they are also more likely to leave your company. Managers should implement solutions that neutralize the retention risk caused by social media. They can create social media groups in which employees will be more likely to collaborate and less likely to share withdrawal intentions or have discussions about external job opportunities. Managers can use social media to directly reduce turnover(跳槽 ) by recognizing employees’ accomplishments and giving visibility to employees’ success stories.

Passage Two
Researchers say most of us make instant judgments about a person on the basis of how they look. They say facial features can determine whether we like or trust someone. It may even influence how we vote.
“Over the years, we have found that facial features affect the way many of us perceive others,” says Elisabeth Cornwell, a psychology researcher at the university’s Perception Laboratory. Studies suggest that people are less likely to trust those with particularly masculine features, such as a square jaw, small eyes or a big nose. “They are perceived as dominant and less trustworthy,” says Ms. Cornwell. “It doesn’t mean that men who look more masculine are less trustworthy. It’s just our first impressions.” Those with less masculine features—larger eyes, a smaller nose and thinner lips—are deemed to be more trustworthy. “We are very good at processing these features quickly,” says Ms. Cornwell.
The researchers are putting their science to the test at the Royal Society’s annual Summer Exhibition in London. They have subtly manipulated the faces of some British politicians accentuating their dominant and trustworthy features respectively. “We have used a computer program to change the shape of their face and features. We hope it will help people to understand our work.” So should we expect to see all those people at the exhibition getting tips? “I don’t think it’s something they will want to try,” says Ms. Cornwell. “It’s not really possible with television. We all know what they look like. I think they would be naive to try it.”

Passage Three
Sporting activities are essentially modified forms of hunting behavior. Viewed biologically, the modern footballer is in reality a member of a hunting group. His killing weapon has turned into a harmless football and his prey into a goalmouth. If his aim is accurate and he scores a goal, he enjoys the hunter’s triumph of getting his prey.
To understand how this transformation has taken place we must briefly look at our forefathers. They spent over a million years evolving as cooperative hunters. Their very survival depended on success in the hunting field. Under this pressure their whole way of life, even their bodies, became greatly changed. They became chasers, runners, jumpers, aimers, throwers and prey-killers. They cooperated as skillful male group attackers.
Then about ten thousand years ago, after this immensely long period of hunting their food, they became farmers. Their improved intelligence, so vital to their old hunting life, was put to a new use—that of controlling and domesticating their prey. The hunt became suddenly out of date. The food was there on the farms, awaiting their needs. The risks and uncertainties of the hunt were no longer essential for survival.
The skills and thirst for hunting remained, however, and demanded new outlets. Hunting for sport replaced hunting for necessity. This new activity involved all the original hunting sequences but the aim of the operation was no longer to avoid starvation. Instead, the sportsmen set off to test their skill against prey that were no longer essential to their survival. To be sure, the kill may have been eaten but there were other much simpler ways of obtaining a meaty meal.
