The term “quality of life” is difficult to define. It (E-31) (composes / consists / covers) a very wide scope such as living environment, health, employment, family life, friends, education, leisure and recreation, and so on… Generally speaking, the quality of life, especially (E-32) (when / as / which) seen by the individual, is meaningful in terms of the degree to which these various areas of life are (E-33) (available / adaptable / agreeable) or provide satisfaction to the individual.
As activity carried out as one thinks fit during one’s spare time, leisure has the following (E-34) (definitions / identification / functions): relaxation, recreation and entertainment, and personal development. The importance of these varies according to the nature of one’s job and one’s lifestyle. However, people who need to (E-35) (provide / consume / exert) much energy in their work will find relaxation most desirable in leisure. Those with a better education and in professional occupations may tend more to seek recreation and personal development in leisure.

If an animal is moved from its home in the tropics to a cold climate, it will die if it is not kept warm. And animals ( E-36) to cold climates will die if they are moved to the tropics. Many plants, too, will die if they are removed from the place where they (E-37) grow and are transplanted into an unfamiliar soil. Almost every species is adapted to life in a particular place by its organs and their functions and by (E-38) habits. The specialized adaptation has great advantages, for it (E-39) many organisms to survive under different conditions. It also has disadvantages, for it means that the life of most species is controlled by (E-40) conditions.
Living things are not (E-41) over the earth freely; most species have definite habits for living places. Ecology is the study of how organisms live in their environment. This means finding out how an organism survives and (E-42) in certain surroundings. By environment we mean not only the soil and the climate but the living things of the same species and other species, plant or animal. Most living things are (E-43) to their environment. Some can (E-44) certain features of their environment to suit themselves; a beaver (海狸), for example, can make ponds by building dams, many birds and insects can build elaborate nests to provide (E-45) for their young. But these skills are restricted and highly specialized. Most organisms must adapt their bodies to fit in with their surroundings, and since they can adapt only for particular surroundings, they are found only in places where they can live successfully with the least effort.

Section C
Directions: In this section, you are going to read a passage with five statements attached to it. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. (每个段落均标有字母。填写答案时,仅填写每段前的大写字母即可,不要使用小写或者有多余空格,以免判错。)
A. One evening a few years ago I found myself in an anxiety. Nothing was really wrong. My family and I were healthy, my career was busy and successful—I was just feeling vaguely down and in need of a friend who could raise my spirits, someone who would meet me for coffee and let me rant until the clouds lifted. I dialed my best friend, who now lives across the country in California, and got her voicemail. That’s when it started to dawn on me—lonesomeness was at the root of my dreariness. My social life had dwindled to almost nothing, but somehow until that moment I’d been too busy to notice. Now it hit me hard. My old friends, buddies since college or even childhood, know everything about me; when they left, they had taken my context with them.
B. Research has shown the long-range negative consequences of social isolation on one’s health. But my concerns were more short-term. I needed to feel understood right then in the way that only a girlfriend can understand you. I knew it would be wrong to expect my husband to replace my friends: He couldn’t, and even if he could, to whom would I then complain about my husband? So I resolved to acquire new friends—women like me who had kids and enjoyed rolling their eyes at the world a little bit just as I did. Since I’d be making friends with more intention than I’d ever given the process, I realized I could be selective, that I could in effect design my own social life. The downside, of course, was that I felt pretty frightened.
C. After all, it’s a whole lot harder to make friends in midlife that it is when you’re younger—a fact woman I’ve spoken with point out again and again. As Leslie Danzig, 41, a Chicago theater director and mother, sees it, when you’re in your teens and 20s, you’re more or less friends with everyone unless there’s a reason not to be. Your college roommate becomes your best pal at least partly due to proximity. Now there needs to be a reason to be friends. “There are many people I’m comfortable around, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call them friends. Comfort isn’t enough to sustain a real friendship,” Danzig says.
D. Fortunately, my discomfort soon passed. I realized that as a mature friend seeker my vulnerability risk was actually pretty low. If someone didn’t take me up on my offer, so what: I wasn’t in junior high when I might have been rejected for having the wrong clothes or hair. At my age I have amassed enough self-esteem to realize that I have plenty to offer.
E. While you’re busy making new friends, remember that you still need to nurture your old ones. We asked Marla Paul, author of The Friendship Crisis: Finding, Making, and Keeping Friends When You’re Not a Kid Anymore, for the best ways to maintain these important relationships. Keep in touch. Your friends should be a priority; schedule regular lunch dates or coffee catch-up sessions, no matter how busy you are. Know his / her business. Keep track of important events in a friend’s life and show your support. Call or e-mail to let her know you’re thinking of him / her. Speak your mind. Tell a friend (politely) if something he / she did really upset you. If you can’t be totally honest, then you need to re-examine the relationship. Accept his / her flaws. No one is perfect. Heartfelt compliments make everyone feel great, so tell him / her how much you love his / her new sweater or what a great job he / she did on a work project.
E-46. Leslie Danzig thought making friends at one’s middle age needed some reasons.
E-47. For the author, a girlfriend might be the first person to understand her and erase her negative feeling.
E-48. In Mafia Paul’s book, to be a better friend, you should keep track with your friends, care for your friend’s job, express yourself, accept her flaws and compliment your friend for his / her good dressing and job.
E-49. As a mature friend seeker, the author finds herself with enough confidence to offer and take rejection with grace.
E-50. A few years ago the author felt lonely and depressed when she phoned her best friend in another city who was much wanted then but unavailable

Part IV Reading comprehension (阅读理解题。包括3篇阅读材料,每篇阅读材料后有5个问题,请从选项中选出最佳答案。)
Passage One
In 1826, a Frenchman named Niepce needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist. So he invented a very simple camera. He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo.
The next important date in the history of photography was in 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. In his pictures you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest things. This kind of photo was called a Daguerreotype.
Soon, other people began to use Daguerre’s way. Travelers brought back wonderful photos from all around the world. People took pictures of famous buildings, cities and mountains.
In about 1840, photography was developed. Then photographers(摄影家)could take pictures of people and moving things. That was not simple. The photographers had to carry a lot of films and other machines. But this did not stop them, for example, some in the United States worked so hard.
Mathew Brady was a famous American photographer. He took many pictures of great people. The pictures were unusual because they were very lifelike(栩栩如生的).
Photography also became one kind of art by the end of the 19th century. Some photos were not just copies of the real world. They showed ideas and feelings, like other kinds of art.

Passage Two
Once we truly know that life is difficult—once we truly understand and accept it—then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.
Most do not fully see this truth. Instead, they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.
What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness, loneliness, regret, anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and full of pain as well as joy.
Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of the human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Those things that hurt, instruct.” It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.

Passage Three
With obesity now affecting 2% of the population in England and expected to rise to 35% by 2030, should we now recognize it as a disease? Obesity, in which excess body fat has accumulated to such an extent that health may be adversely affected, meets the dictionary definition of disease, argues Professor John Wilding. He points out that more than 200 genes influence weight. “Thus body weight is strongly influenced by biology — it is not an individual’s fault if they develop obesity.” Yet the widespread view is that obesity is self-induced and that it is entirely the individual’s responsibility to do something about it. Recognizing obesity as a chronic disease with severe complications rather than a lifestyle choice “should help reduce the stigma and discrimination experienced by many people with obesity,” he adds.
Professor Wilding disagrees that labeling a high proportion of the population as having a disease removes personal responsibility or may overwhelm health services, pointing out that other common diseases, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, require people to take action to manage their condition. He suggests that most people with obesity will eventually develop complications. “But unless we accept that obesity is a disease, we are not going to be able to tackle it,” he concludes.
But Dr. Richard Pile, a physician with a special interest in diabetes, argues that adopting this approach “could actually result in worse outcomes for individuals and society.” He believes that the dictionary definition of disease “is so vague that we can classify almost anything as a disease” and says the question is not whether we can, but whether we should, and to what end.
If labeling obesity as a disease was harmless then it wouldn’t really matter, he writes. But labeling obesity as a disease “risks reducing autonomy, disempowering and robbing people of the intrinsic (内在的) motivation that is such an important enabler of change.” What’s more, making obesity a disease “may not benefit patients, but it will benefit healthcare providers and the pharmaceutical (制药的)industry when health insurance and clinical guidelines promote treatment with drugs and surgery,” he warns.
