There are many things we remember from our childhood—the games we played, the music we listened to, etc.; but what about earning pocket money? This was our first-ever wage for doing (C-31)  (issues/chores/choices) such as tidying our bedroom or sorting the laundry. Our reward was a handful of coins that we safely stashed away. But now, it seems, parents’  attitude to handing out cash is changing.
There was a time when cash was king—it was the main currency for financial (C-32)  (transactions/transitions/translations). These days, however, using credit or debit cards, or making contactless (C-33)  (documents/cards/payments), are the most convenient ways of paying. Banks predict that by 2028 only one in ten transactions will be with cash, and that it’s something today’s children will have to (C-34)  (deal with/pay with/come up with). One particular issue is that children may not understand the value of cash because they seldom use it. Parents face a dilemma too—finding a new way (C-35)  (transferring/to transfer/transfer) pocket money, or not bothering to pay it at all. Giving children lessons about finance at school is important, and some experts advise parents to get children started with handling money as young as possible

B) Wouldn’t it be great if you could warm up or cool down your car before you even reach the parking lot? That’s what Viper SmartStart does. It’s like turning your phone into a remote control for your vehicle.

D) The app is free to download and test, but you’ll need extra hardware and a monthly service plan to make the system work.
E) There are four different service plan options, ranging from $70 to $240 per year, depending on the features you select. You will also need a module installed in your car, which costs around $300, plus installation. Hunt for treasure.
F) One of the most unexpected things your smartphone can do is search for metal. If you own an iPhone, download a free app called Metal Detector. This app taps into your phone’s built-in magnetometer, which helps your phone detect the X,Y, Z axes for things like the compass.
G) Metal Detector won’t detect everything that’s metal, but don’t discredit its ability. Point your phone’s camera toward the metal objects and turn up the dial to increase the intensity. You’ll be surprised by the things it picks up. The app detects any metal that is magnetic.
H) If you don’t have an iPhone, a similar app (also called Metal Detector) is available for Android devices. These apps share the same name; however, they were created by other developers and have slight differences in the way they operate.

Part IV Reading comprehension (阅读理解题。包括3篇阅读材料,每篇阅读材料后有5个问题,请从选项中选出最佳答案。)
Passage One
A mobile payment is a money payment made for a product or service through a portable electronic device such as a tablet or cell phone. Mobile payment technology can also be used to send money to friends or family members, for example, with the Alipay and WeChat Pay.
Many banks have recently adopted technology into their banking apps that allow customers to send money instantly to friends and family members directly from their bank accounts. Mobile payments are also made on-site at stores, from convenience stores to large multi-national retailers, by scanning a barcode on a payment app on your phone.
The cost of the purchase may be deducted from a pre-loaded account associated with the particular store, or paid by credit or debit card added in the payment tool. Payment information is encrypted during transactions, so it is thought of as being a safer payment method than paying with a debit or credit card directly.
Mobile payments first became popular in Asia and Europe before becoming more common in the United States and Canada. Early on, mobile payments were sent by text message. Later, technology allowed for pictures of checks to be taken via cell phone camera and sent to the payment recipient. As technology advancs, now bank apps provide services of mobile check deposit.
The most obvious benefit of mobile payments is the elimination(淘汰) of a physical wallet. Not reaching and pulling out cash not only saves time but is safer; and nobody is able to see the contents of your digital wallet or purse.
An additional benefit—though a minor one for most people—is that when you are with other people they are not able to tell what card you have. Users with low credit scores and credit cards with low limits and high APRs might not want, say, an interviewer or date to know these things, and mobile payments offer an additional level of personal privacy.

Passages Two
Playing online games is often dismissed by teachers and parents as it can bring negative impact on young people. However, online gaming can be positive for young people. Games require a level of interaction and skill from the player, unlike watching television, which is more passive. Games may be a concern for parents and teachers, but playing games can also have beneficial impacts for children and young people.
Games are complicated. They require higher order thinking, problem-solving and persistence. Many games, even first-person shooting video games (which may not be appropriate for children) teach cooperation, group work and scenario-based learning. Most games require strategies to understand and work within the rules. Games offer a mix of intrinsic and extrinsic rewards. Humans play games precisely because they give them a sense of accomplishment. The Australian Office of the eSafety Commissioner, Think U Know UK, and the NZ organization Netsafe recognize that online games can help to develop teamwork, concentration, communication and to promote problem-solving skills. They are also an opportunity for young people to practice communication and conflict resolution skills.
Research by the Queensland University of Technology has found that games can improve thinking skills in children. Games often require children to follow instructions, consider their actions, and respond to problems, which can help develop important thinking skills, such as:
— awareness of the environment
— attention to details
— problem-solving and planniing
— literacy.
While online games can seem like an isolating activity, it is often more social than some people think. In fact, according to the Office of the eSafety Commissioner, 81% of Australian young people aged 8-17 played an online game and 64% played with others in the 12 months to June 2017. Half of those surveyed had played online games with someone they had not met in person. Many children end up playing games with friends, and some even make new friends. This can improve a child’s social skills, including:
— collaboration and teamwork
— understanding behavior
— peer-to-peer learning.

Passage Three
Marketing, as a business practice, has evolved significantly over the centuries, adapting to cultural, technological, and economic changes. Its origins can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where merchants in Mesopotamia and Egypt used basic forms of trade and promotion to attract buyers. However, marketing as a formal discipline began to take shape in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Industrial Revolution (1760–1840) marked a turning point in marketing history. Mass production led to an abundance of goods, and businesses began to focus on creating demand. In 1864, the first advertising agency, J. Walter Thompson, was established in the United States, revolutionizing how companies promoted their products. By the early 20th century, pioneers like John Wanamaker, a retail magnate, introduced the concept of department store advertising and customer-centric promotions.
The mid-20th century saw the rise of television and radio, transforming marketing into a mass communication tool. The 1950s and 1960s are often referred to as the “Golden Age of Advertising,” with iconic campaigns such as Coca-Cola’s “It’s the Real Thing” and Volkswagen’s “Think Small”. In 1967, Philip Kotler published Marketing Management, which established marketing as a scientific field of study and emphasized the importance of understanding consumer behavior.
The digital era brought another seismic shift. The advent of the Internet in the 1990s introduced email marketing, online ads, and search engine optimization (SEO). By the 2000s, social media platforms enabled businesses to engage directly with consumers. Today, data analytics and artificial intelligence dominate marketing strategies, allowing for hyper-personalization and predictive advertising.
From ancient trade practices to modern AI-driven campaigns, the history of marketing reflects humanity’s constant quest to connect, communicate, and innovate. As technology continues to evolve, marketing will undoubtedly adapt to meet the needs of future generations.
